Gayle Beck

Gayle Haywood Beck is a true Hunting Ridge socialite, though a reluctant one. She is sweet, mild-mannered and delicate and if not for her own family’s tremendous wealth, she may have chosen a very different life. Years after moving to Hunting Ridge with her husband, Troy, she finds herself in a cycle of abuse, self-doubt, and prescription medication.

When we first meet Gayle, she is lying in bed beside Troy, praying he will fall asleep. Many of us wouldn’t tolerate the way he treats her, or her son, but there are many factors in Gayle’s life that make her inertia understandable. Her marriage wasn’t always like this. It started out good, and happy and this makes it difficult for her to see things as black and white.

Her incredible family wealth makes it impossible for her husband to compete with the successful breadwinners he sees on the train day in and day out. Her domineering mother keeps insisting that this all just part of marriage, and reminds her that her entire life is structured around being married. Now throw in her gentle disposition and the pills she’s been given to feel better, and her indecision becomes real. It’s very easy to hide sometimes, and just sweep things under the carpet.

Gayle’s generosity has led her to plan and host the benefit gala for the local women’s clinic. Her good friend, Love, has joined her and brought her neighbor, Marie. Janie Kirk is also on the committee thanks to a large donation and a social friendship with Gayle.

As the spring moves on, ignoring what’s right in front of her becomes more and more difficult for Gayle, especially when she begins to see her life through the eyes of one of her trusted employees. In the end, she has to find her own voice, and an inner strength she never knew she had.
