Love Welsh
Love was the first character I created, and in many ways the initial inspiration for Four Wives.
This book, at its core, is about the consequences of making the choice to be a stay-at-home mother. And one of those consequences is that an entire part of you is neglected for years, sometimes forever.
This is where we find Love. She was once the child prodigy of her famous father, a renowned intellectual and scholar. But her young career ended after a series of events that no one in Hunting Ridge – not even her husband – knows about. Running from this past, she got married, moved across the country, had three children….but now her past is coming back to haunt her – forcing her to deal with her traumatic childhood, and also with the choice she made to run from her brilliant career into the life of a suburban mommy.
Love is a dedicated mother. Less wealthy than many of her peers, she manages her home and three young children on her own, and has become a woman she sometimes does not recognize. She struggles to lose those last baby pounds, to keep her house clean, and to stay connected to her husband, the town’s local doctor. All of this weighs her down, and the threat of her past now coming back into her life soon becomes more than she can bear.
As she labors to hold it all together pieces of her past are revealed, not only to us, but to her as she discovers in the end the secrets that were kept from her for over two decades.
